Director of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Speaks at Our School
Time :2019-06-22

On the afternoon of March 25, 2019, Mario Pezzini, director of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), delivered a speech entitled "2019 global development outlook: reflections on development strategies" at the 84th Beijing economic and management forum held by our school. The lecture was hosted by Professor Xing Chunbing of our school and attended by Dean Qi Yudong, Professor Li Shi, executive director of China Institute of Income Distribution, and Professor Luo Chuliang, dean of the Department of Economics.

At the start of the lecture, Mario Pezzini noted that in 2008, for the first time, developing and emerging economies accounted for more than 50% of the global economy. Since then, the global development outlook has been tracking the transfer of global wealth and its impact on developing countries, and the report has identified new trends in wealth transfer. Since the 1990s, China and India have grown significantly faster than the OECD average. However, Mario Pezzini argues that economic growth does not solve all development problems, with absolute poverty continuing to rise in some countries and inequality rising in others. He went on to say that the current global situation presents unprecedented challenges for countries to adapt strategies that reflect their endowments, cultures and institutions rather than trying to mimic the development paths of the past. Finally, he concluded that development strategies should be based on specific circumstances but should be based on a common set of principles.

After the speech, Wan Haiyuan, vice President of the China Institute of Income Distribution, made a comment. The teachers and students present actively discussed and interacted with the speaker.
