“Workplace Disability Inclusion: Implications for Enterprise Policy and Practice” Was Successfully Held in BNUBS
Time :2018-12-20

On the afternoon of September 21, 2018, Susanne M. Bruyère, a professor of School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University gave a lecture with the title of “Workplace Disability Inclusion: Implications for Enterprise Policy and Practice” to teachers and students of BNUBS. Professor Lai Desheng, Dean of BNUBS and Director of the Labor Market Research Center (LMRC), presided over the lecture and presented the appointment certificate of the Visiting Professor of LMRC to Professor Bruyère.

As the former Director of the Disability and Rehabilitation Demonstration Project and the Economic Research Program for the Employment Policy for the Disabled supported by the Federal Funds, Professor Bruyère also served as the head of US Department of Labor, Department of Education, and the New York State Department of Education. All these programs have played an important role in ensuring the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. She was the Chairman of the American Psychological Association's Rehabilitation Psychological Branch, President of the National Rehabilitation Education Council, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Global Disability Employment Research and Information Network Executive Committee. To date, she has published three academic monographs and more than 120 academic articles on the inclusion of disability employment.

She reported on a survey conducted by Cornell University on the workplace disability inclusion in US companies. She pointed out that internships for disabled people, some human resources policies for career development and job retention for the disabled will be very effective in improving their employment rate, and the role of managers in this process is very crucial. The significance of this research to business schools is that employers, by raising awareness of differences in employment, should realize that hiring people with disabilities is an effective way to increase corporate diversity and integration. Companies can enrich their diversity and enhance their social responsibility through providing internships, training programs, fostering the initiative of workers, and engaging in disability inclusion practices in recruitment/screening/employment/retention positions.

In the second half of the lecture, teachers and students asked questions and Professor Bruyère answered patiently. Dean Lai Desheng presented a souvenir to her, and then the participants took a group photo together.
