Time :2017-12-05
Recently, the paper named “Unexceptional Exporter Performance in China? The Role of Processing Trade” co-authored by Prof. Dai Mi from BNUBS, Prof. Yu Miaojie from Peking University and Dr. Madhura Maitra from Columbia University was published on the Journal of Development Economics, which is awarded the “2016 Top 10 Best Papers in World Economics” and “2016 Top 10 Best Papers in International Trade” by “The Yearbook of World Economy in 2017”.

The paper disclosed the mystery in productivity of Chinese export enterprises from the perspective of processing trade. The productivity of export enterprises should be higher than those non-export enterprises, however, the fact is on the contrary. How to explain this unusual circumstance particularly existed in China has become a controversial topic in the academic field. Through analyzing data of China’s industrial enterprises and custom trade from 2000 to 2006, the paper found that processing trade enterprises are the key to answering this question. The productivity of processing trade enterprise lowered the overall productivity of export enterprises in China. The paper continued to analyze the reason of low productivity in processing trade enterprises, which is firstly caused by the low cost; Secondly, due to the special beneficial policies, such as tax reduction, enterprises with low productivities tend to choose to conduct the processing trade industry.
